Clifford of Intellitrace, on a planning call for a Microsoft Teams Phone pilot, talks about how IT Partner looks after the company, and works through the order of the next steps with the IT Partner engineer: Teams and Teams Phone first, then moving files out of Box into OneDrive, then retiring the on-premises Active Directory in favor of Entra-joined desktops.

Transcript

This recording is a working call about a Microsoft Teams Phone pilot rather than a sit-down interview. The transcript is an excerpt: Clifford's remarks about IT Partner and the parts of the planning discussion that describe the project. Quote figures and internal staffing discussion are left out. Lightly edited for readability: filler words removed, clear mishearings corrected in [brackets], omitted passages marked […]. Timestamps are positions in the recording, which is the authority where the two differ.

I mean, it's incredible. It blows me away. […] You guys are the best vendor I've had in 45 years. No vendor has ever taken care of me like you guys do. I love you guys. I wish I could buy everything through you, because it sure would save me a lot of headaches. Just like today: I got a notification about an issue with the synchronization of our internal Active Directory, and a reminder that I haven't followed up on those errors yet. Nobody takes care of it like that.

Use us. We would love to help you. If you still use on-premises AD [...]

We're not really using it. The only thing that's left on premises is our accounting, and that's just running QuickBooks files and a QuickBooks database server. We're still using [the on-premises Active Directory] now, yes, and all of our Windows machines are still joined to it, but we're going to move all of the Windows desktops into Azure, get rid of the internal AD, and just run a standalone server for our accounting folks.

We can help you with that. We've accumulated a huge amount of experience. We can switch your machines automatically, without users recreating profiles.

Really? You can do that? Oh, man. […]

You're preaching to the choir. I'm trying to get us to cut loose some of these other systems and get back to just using the Microsoft stuff that we pay for.

If you start with Teams, it would definitely be a very good move in the right direction, and it would help with everything else. Let's start with that.

Clifford

Let's start with Teams. Once we get into Teams, then we can start chipping away at these other systems. […] We could certainly move out of Box and into OneDrive.

If you ask me: Teams, definitely number one, with the Teams phone system; then Box; and then your on-premises Active Directory, creating Azure AD-joined profiles and making sure all your dependencies move to the cloud. […]

And the best part: the proof of concept is like a commercial project, because if you decide to move into production, the only thing you need to change is to add licenses. Everything else will stay the same.

I love it. […]

Sweet. Awesome. Thank you so much.

You're welcome. It's a pleasure to work with you.
