Windows Enterprise LTSC vs N LTSC vs IoT Enterprise LTSC: Which Long-Term Servicing Edition You May Buy, What Each Costs, and When a Server or a Kiosk Needs One
Six long-term servicing editions sit on the October 2026 price list at the same $295 per device, and they are not interchangeable. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and its N edition leave support on 12 January 2027; Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 and N LTSC 2024 run to 9 October 2029 with no extended phase; the IoT Enterprise LTSC releases run to 13 January 2032 and 10 October 2034. Enterprise LTSC is an upgrade on a qualifying Windows license; IoT Enterprise LTSC is licensed for fixed-function devices; the N editions drop the media components and suit almost nobody. Here is the table, then the rules, the server case and the prices.
The six editions in one table
Three questions sort the rows: general-purpose PC or fixed-function device, Windows 10 or Windows 11, and whether anyone requires the media components removed. Every price is Microsoft list price, October 2026 price list, Commercial segment, one-time and perpetual; the support dates are Microsoft's lifecycle dates at the time of writing.
| Edition | Built for | Who may buy it | Supported until | List price, October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 | Special-purpose PCs that must stay on Windows 10 | A qualifying Windows license plus this upgrade, through Volume Licensing or CSP; or a Windows Enterprise E3 or E5 subscription | 12 January 2027, no extended phase; ESU through January 2030 | $295 per device |
| Windows 10 Enterprise N LTSC 2021 | The same, without the media components | The same | 12 January 2027 | $295 per device |
| Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 | Fixed-function devices: kiosks, signage players, medical and industrial equipment | Device makers through an authorized Windows IoT distributor; organizations as an upgrade through the Microsoft Customer Agreement, MPSA or Select Plus | 13 January 2032 | $295 per device |
| Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 | Special-purpose PCs on Windows 11 | As for Enterprise LTSC 2021 | 9 October 2029, no extended phase | $295 per device |
| Windows 11 Enterprise N LTSC 2024 | The same, without the media components | The same | 9 October 2029 | $295 per device |
| Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 | Fixed-function devices on Windows 11 | As for IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 | 10 October 2034; mainstream phase to 9 October 2029 | $295 per device |
The price is the same on every row; the support window, five years for Enterprise LTSC and ten for IoT Enterprise LTSC, and the permitted use are what differ.
What the N means, and why almost nobody should buy it
The N editions date from a 2004 European Commission decision that required Microsoft to sell Windows in Europe without Windows Media Player and the related media technologies. Microsoft's description on the October 2026 price list says it in one sentence: Windows 11 Enterprise N LTSC 2024 includes the same functionality as Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, except that it does not include certain media related technologies such as Windows Media Player, Camera, Music, Movies & TV, or the Skype app. The Windows 10 N LTSC 2021 row reads the same way. Everything else is identical: the build, the servicing dates, the management rights, the $295.
The gap is wider than music. Any application that calls the Windows media components, a conferencing client, a signage player, a camera viewer, fails or reports a missing codec until the Media Feature Pack is installed, the same gap and the same fix we describe for Windows 11 Pro vs Pro N. The N and non-N editions are different images, so changing edition is a rebuild, not a key change.
Buy Windows 11 Enterprise N LTSC 2024 only when a regulator, a procurement specification or an existing N image requires it, and plan the Media Feature Pack into the build. For every other device, the non-N edition at the same price is the answer.
What LTSC leaves out, and why that is the point for a kiosk, a lab PC or a medical device
The Long-Term Servicing Channel ships one build and keeps it. Microsoft's LTSC overview says a device on it skips feature updates and receives only the monthly quality updates, and that features which could be updated with new functionality, the inbox Windows apps and Microsoft Edge among them, are not included. The Microsoft Store is absent, so the apps that arrive through it, the Copilot app included, are absent too; Edge is installed separately where a browser is needed. New features come only with the next LTSC release, which is a new installation and, without Software Assurance or a subscription that carries new-version rights, a new license.
For a kiosk, a laboratory instrument PC, a signage player or a medical device certified against one build, that is the property wanted: nothing changes under the application for five or ten years except security fixes. Management is the Enterprise stack: Entra or domain join, Intune, BitLocker, Defender Antivirus, AppLocker.
The same properties answer "can we put LTSC on ordinary office PCs". The license can be assigned to any qualifying PC; the support cannot. Microsoft's Office and Windows configuration matrix lists Microsoft 365 Apps as not supported on Windows 10 LTSC 2021 or Windows 11 LTSC 2024 at the time of writing; the supported suite on those builds is Office LTSC 2024, through January 2027 on LTSC 2021 and October 2029 on LTSC 2024. Office PCs belong on the General Availability Channel, through Windows 11 Pro or an Enterprise E3 subscription; LTSC is for devices that do one job.
The licensing rules in plain words
Enterprise LTSC is an upgrade, never a full license. The price-list description of Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 Upgrade says it builds on Windows 11 Enterprise; the device must already carry a qualifying Windows license, normally the OEM's Windows Pro, and the $295 upgrade is added to it. Microsoft's Windows Commercial Licensing overview lists Windows Enterprise LTSC in per-device and per-user models depending on the program, and among the use rights of a Windows Enterprise E3 or E5 subscription, at the time of writing, so an organization paying per user for Enterprise E3 may deploy LTSC under that subscription. Software Assurance is optional on the perpetual upgrade; without it, an LTSC 2021 license does not become an LTSC 2024 license.
IoT Enterprise LTSC is licensed for fixed-function use. Microsoft's volume-licensing page offers the upgrade for fixed-function devices through the Microsoft Customer Agreement, MPSA and Select Plus, not the Enterprise Agreement, activated with a Multiple Activation Key or KMS. A new device normally arrives with the license from its maker, who buys through an authorized Windows IoT distributor. Each LTSC release requires its own license. A general-purpose office PC with an IoT license is outside the terms.
What a license reviewer asks for: for Enterprise LTSC, the qualifying base license (the OEM Pro certificate or the volume-licensing record) plus the upgrade purchase or the Enterprise E3 assignment; for IoT Enterprise LTSC, the license terms that came with the device or the volume-licensing upgrade record, and a device role that reads as fixed-function. An LTSC image activated with another edition's key is an installation, not a license.
The server angle: a legacy application on Windows Server 2016 that only needs a client OS
Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 leave support on the same day, 12 January 2027. Many machines caught by that date are not servers in any meaningful sense: a signage controller, a badge-printing station or a laboratory data collector installed on a Windows Server 2016 virtual machine because that was the template on the host. If the vendor's support statement names Windows 10 or Windows 11 Enterprise and the application has no server role, the supported path is a rebuild as a client virtual machine on Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 or Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024: $295 per device, perpetual, supported to 13 January 2032 or 10 October 2034, once the licensing desk confirms the virtual-use terms. Windows Server 2016 Extended Security Updates through Azure Arc and isolation behind written controls are compared in the one server you cannot replace.
The other case is a device already on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 that the vendor will not certify on anything else. Microsoft's Windows message center says ESU for that edition went on sale on 1 September 2026, per device, for up to three years. On the October 2026 price list, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 ESU is $61 per device for year one, $122 for year two and $244 for year three, cumulative: $427 to reach January 2030, against $295 for an IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 license that runs to 2032. The ordinary Windows 10 estate has the same per-device shape; its first ESU year ended on 13 October 2026.
A worked example: the signage system kept on an IoT Enterprise LTSC license
A medical practice of about 200 users and about 250 Windows devices is being acquired by a hospital group, with a possession date about four weeks out. The acquirer's checklist requires central management of every server and a supported operating system on every device, so about a dozen servers are being rebuilt on Windows Server 2022 and connected to Azure Arc. One machine does not fit: a digital-signage system on a Windows Server 2016 virtual machine that the vendor will not move to a newer server release.
The edition decision runs through the table. The vendor's support statement names Windows 10 Enterprise, which rules out Windows 11 LTSC 2024 until the vendor certifies it. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 would end on 12 January 2027, the same day as the server it replaces, so it buys nothing. The N edition is excluded because the player renders video all day. That leaves Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021: a signage player is a fixed-function device, the license is $295, perpetual, and support runs to 13 January 2032. The plan is to order one license once the licensing desk confirms the upgrade and virtual-use terms, build a fresh LTSC 2021 virtual machine, move the player software, and keep the 2016 machine powered off for ninety days before deleting it.
It goes on the acquirer's inventory as a fixed-function device on its own VLAN, outbound only to the vendor's content service, under the practice's existing EDR and nightly backup. Windows Server 2016 ESU through Arc stays on the plan as the fallback if the rebuild slips past 12 January 2027.
What it costs on our side
Microsoft's charges, the LTSC licenses, the ESU fees and any Azure consumption, are billed to you by Microsoft and are never a fee of ours. Our work is quoted in writing before it starts.
- LTSC licenses: the quote button on each software page prices the edition for your device count: Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 for fixed-function devices, Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 Upgrade for special-purpose PCs, and the Windows 10 rows where the vendor has not certified Windows 11.
- The estate that is moving: Windows 11 Migration and Windows 10 ESU Transition, $25 per device plus a $1,950 tenant fee, four weeks: the per-device assessment, the Intune-driven upgrades, and the edition set in the image.
- The server that must stay a server: Windows Server ESU Enrollment through Azure Arc, $35 per server plus a $1,450 tenant fee, one week; for a machine that can take neither ESU nor a rebuild, the Windows Server 2012 R2 Post-ESU Isolation and Exit Plan, $3,950 per project, two weeks, whose controls apply to a 2016 host.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC and N LTSC?
Only the media components: Windows Media Player, Camera, Music, Movies & TV and the Skype app, per Microsoft's description. Both are $295 per device (Microsoft list price, October 2026 price list), both end on 9 October 2029, and the Media Feature Pack restores the components. A change of edition is a rebuild.
What does Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC cost and who is allowed to buy it?
$295 per device, perpetual, Microsoft list price, October 2026 price list. It is licensed for fixed-function devices: pre-installed by device makers through authorized Windows IoT distributors, or as an upgrade through the Microsoft Customer Agreement, MPSA and Select Plus. It is not a license for general office PCs.
Can we put LTSC on ordinary office PCs?
The license allows it on a qualifying device; the support does not. Microsoft's configuration matrix lists Microsoft 365 Apps as not supported on Windows 10 LTSC 2021 or Windows 11 LTSC 2024 at the time of writing, there is no Microsoft Store, and new features never arrive. Office PCs belong on Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise in the General Availability Channel.
Our vendor only supports Windows 10 LTSC 2021; what are the support dates and the ESU?
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and N LTSC 2021 end on 12 January 2027 with no extended phase. ESU has been on sale since 1 September 2026: $61 per device for year one, $122 for year two, $244 for year three, cumulative, through January 2030. Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 is a different product, supported until 13 January 2032.
How long is Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 supported compared with IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024?
Five years against ten. Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 ends on 9 October 2029 with no extended phase; Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 has mainstream support to 9 October 2029 and extended support to 10 October 2034.
