Windows 11 Pro vs Pro N: The Difference, and Which to Buy
Windows 11 Pro N sits next to Windows 11 Pro on every price list at the same price, and the only visible difference is one letter. That letter means the media components are missing. For a US organization the answer is short: buy Windows 11 Pro, and choose Pro N only for a device that already runs an N edition. Here is what the N edition removes, what breaks, what each edition costs on the October 2026 price list, and why the upgrade paths are not symmetrical.
What the N edition is
The N editions exist because of a European Commission decision in 2004 that required Microsoft to offer a version of Windows in Europe without Windows Media Player and the related media technologies. Microsoft's product description on the October 2026 price list puts it in one sentence: Windows 11 Pro N includes the same functionality as Windows 11 Pro, except that it does not include certain media related technologies, such as Windows Media Player, Camera, Music and Movies & TV, or the Skype app. A KN variant exists for Korea for the same reason.
Everything else is identical: the same build, servicing, security features, management rights and activation. Microsoft lists Pro N on the US price list, which is why a US buyer sees both rows and asks the question.
What Pro N removes, and what the Media Feature Pack restores
Microsoft's documentation for the Media Feature Pack for Windows N lists what the N editions leave out: Windows Media Player, the pre-installed media apps (Music, Movies & TV, Voice Recorder), the Skype app, and the underlying media components and codecs that other applications call to play or record audio and video. The Media Feature Pack puts them back. On Windows 11 it is an optional feature rather than a separate download: Settings, Apps, Optional features, View features, then Media Feature Pack. It needs an internet connection and a few minutes, and it can be scripted during imaging.
What still works without the pack: Microsoft 365 Apps, Edge, BitLocker, Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, Windows Hello, domain and Entra join, Intune enrollment, Windows Update, Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and every management feature that separates Pro from Home. Pro N is still Pro. The gap is a set of media components, and nothing else.
What breaks for a US organization
Three things, in the order we see them on help desks.
Microsoft Teams. Microsoft's documentation states that some Teams functionality, such as audio or video calling, will not work on Windows 11 N without the Media Feature Pack. A new laptop that shipped with Pro N joins its first meeting with no microphone and no camera, and the ticket reads like a hardware fault.
Applications that rely on the Windows media components. Screen recorders, other conferencing clients, e-learning players, camera viewers, dictation tools, and anything that plays embedded video inside a desktop app may fail silently or report a missing codec. A PowerPoint deck with an embedded video is the usual office example.
Imaging and support overhead. Every N device needs one more build step and one more line in the build document. In a fleet of 20 to 500 devices the cost is not the license, which is the same, but the extra tickets.
The fix is always the same: install the Media Feature Pack. The question is why you would buy an edition that needs the fix.
What each edition costs
On the October 2026 price list the two editions carry identical Microsoft list prices. For a device that already carries a qualifying Windows license, typically the OEM copy that shipped with the PC, Microsoft sells the edition upgrade: Windows 11 Pro Upgrade is $187 per device and Windows 11 Pro N Upgrade is $187 per device, one-time and perpetual (Microsoft list price, October 2026 price list). Academic customers pay $65 per device for either edition.
Organizations with a Microsoft 365 Business subscription have a lower-priced path for devices that came with Windows 11 Home: the Windows 11 Home to Pro Upgrade for Microsoft 365 Business is $49 per device, and the Windows 11 Home N to Pro N Upgrade for Microsoft 365 Business is also $49 (Microsoft list price, October 2026 price list). Microsoft's description ties that offer to customers deploying a Microsoft 365 Business subscription on the device, so confirm which subscription the tenant holds before ordering it.
Because the price never favors N, the decision is purely about what the device needs to do.
The upgrade paths, and why they are not symmetrical
Home to Pro is an edition change, not a reinstall. Enter a Pro product key under Settings, System, Activation, and the device moves to Pro with its apps and data in place. Microsoft's edition upgrade documentation lists Home to Pro and Pro to Enterprise as supported in-place changes. Home N to Pro N works the same way, which is what the $49 Home N to Pro N offer is for.
Pro N to Pro is where buyers get caught. The N and non-N editions are different images, and Microsoft's supported edition paths move an N edition to another N edition, not across the line to Pro. Entering a Pro key on a Pro N device does not change the edition. The route that works is a rebuild from Windows 11 Pro media activated with the Pro license: a backup, a reimage and a re-enrollment, or an Autopilot reset if the device is already in Intune. Budget an hour of technician time per device plus the user's downtime. If a batch of Pro N devices only needs the media features, installing the Media Feature Pack is the smaller correction; rebuild only when you want one edition across the fleet.
Which to buy: the one-line recommendation
For a US organization: buy Windows 11 Pro, and buy Pro N only for a device that already runs Home N or Pro N and that you are not going to rebuild.
The reasoning is short. The price is the same. Pro N removes components that Teams and common business applications need. Nothing in Pro N is better for a US buyer; there is no privacy, security or performance advantage, only an absence. If a vendor ships you Pro N devices, ask for Pro before you accept the order, because the swap after delivery is a reimage.
Two exceptions. A company with European subsidiaries that runs one image across all regions can standardize on Pro N with the Media Feature Pack installed during build. And a retail device that arrives as Home N moves to Pro N for $49 under the Microsoft 365 Business offer, which costs less than a rebuild if the media gap does not matter for that user.
When you move a fleet to Windows 11, pick the edition in the image once. Windows 11 Migration and Windows 10 ESU Transition runs the per-device assessment and the Intune-driven upgrades at $25 per device plus a $1,950 tenant fee, and Microsoft Intune Initial Setup for Windows Autopilot ($1,300 per project) makes the edition part of the provisioning profile. If the fleet is still on Windows 10, the ESU year-one deadline sets the timeline.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windows 11 Pro N the same as Windows 11 Pro?
Functionally yes, except for the media components: Windows Media Player, the media apps, Skype and the codecs other apps use are missing until the Media Feature Pack is installed.
Does Microsoft Teams work on Windows 11 Pro N?
Chat and files work, but Microsoft's documentation states that audio or video calling will not work without the Media Feature Pack. Install it from Settings, Apps, Optional features first.
Can I change Windows 11 Pro N to Pro with a product key?
No. Home to Pro is a key change; Pro N to Pro is a rebuild from Windows 11 Pro media. Decide the edition before the devices ship.
Is Windows 11 Pro N cheaper than Windows 11 Pro?
No. Both are $187 per device as an edition upgrade and $49 per device under the Home to Pro offer for Microsoft 365 Business tenants (Microsoft list price, October 2026 price list).

Key takeaways
- Pro N is Pro without the media components; a 2004 European Commission decision created the edition, and Microsoft sells it on the US price list at the same price as Pro.
- Teams audio and video calling and any app that calls the Windows media components fail on Pro N until the Media Feature Pack is installed from Optional features.
- Both editions are $187 per device as an edition upgrade and $49 per device under the Home to Pro offer for Microsoft 365 Business tenants (Microsoft list price, October 2026 price list).
- Home to Pro is a product key change; Pro N to Pro is a rebuild from Pro media, so choose the edition before the devices ship.
- A US organization buys Windows 11 Pro and reserves Pro N for devices that already run an N edition.
Open Windows 11 Pro to quote the edition upgrade for your fleet, or Windows 11 Pro N if you are matching devices that already run an N edition.
