Microsoft 365 plan components: what is inside, side by side

Every Microsoft 365 subscription is a fixed set of service plans, the indivisible units a license switches on: Exchange Online, Teams, Intune, Entra ID, Defender, Purview and the rest, each at a level. This page reads Microsoft’s own map and shows it the way a buyer needs it: compare plans component by component, open one plan to see everything inside, or tick the components you need and find the cheapest plan that carries them, at Microsoft list price.

A level (Plan 1, P2, E3) is the edition of the component the plan carries; a check mark means the component has one edition; a dash means the plan does not carry it. Prices are Microsoft list, annual commitment paid upfront, per user per month.

How to read it

Components, levels and what the page leaves out

Quick start

  1. Compare plans: pick two to four plans; tick “differences only” to see what the step up or down changes. The bold cell is the highest level in the row.
  2. Inside one plan: every component of one plan, grouped by family, with a line on what each does and a link where Microsoft sells it standalone.
  3. Find a plan by component: tick what you need; the plans that carry all of it list cheapest first, and “Compare” drops one into the matrix.

Not here: feature limits inside a component (mailbox sizes, storage pools, meeting caps), tenant-level switches, and the no-Teams variants. The cost calculator prices a mix under each commitment, and the E5 vs E3 + add-ons calculator answers the upgrade question in dollars.

Assumptions and sources

  • Composition. Microsoft’s “Product names and service plan identifiers for licensing” reference, read from the MicrosoftDocs mirror on 2026-11-01; Microsoft updates it about monthly and the import re-runs with the price list. Service plans are folded into components by edition (Plan 1, P2, E3) and the Government and Education variants into the same component.
  • Prices. Microsoft list price from the current price list, annual commitment paid upfront, per user per month, in the segment the plan is sold in. Plans without a product on our list show “price on request”.
  • Hidden by default. Plumbing plans (Exchange Foundation, Nucleus, Microsoft Search, Common Data Service), retired items and the sub-features of Microsoft 365 Copilot; a toggle shows them.

Questions this page gets asked

What is a service plan?

The indivisible unit Microsoft switches on when a license is assigned: Exchange Online (Plan 1), Microsoft Teams, Intune, Entra ID P1 and so on. Every subscription is a fixed set of them, published by Microsoft in its licensing service plan reference, which is the map this page reads.

What does a level like Plan 1, P2 or E3 mean?

The edition of the component the plan carries. Exchange Online Plan 1 is a 50 GB mailbox and Plan 2 a 100 GB mailbox with an archive; Entra ID P1 adds Conditional Access and P2 adds Identity Protection and Privileged Identity Management. The compare view marks the highest level in bold when the plans differ.

Why does a plan show more service plans than components?

Microsoft lists every technical unit, including plumbing such as Exchange Foundation or Nucleus, retired items, and several entries for one product's editions. The page folds editions into one component with a level and hides the plumbing; the toggle shows everything.

Which plans are covered?

The Business, Enterprise and Frontline suites, the Exchange Online plans, Apps for business and enterprise, EMS E3 and E5, the E5 Security and E5 Compliance suites, the common add-ons, and the Education and Government suites we sell. Microsoft publishes several hundred SKUs; this page carries the ones a buyer compares.

Are the prices the ones we would pay?

They are Microsoft's list prices from the current price list, annual commitment paid upfront, per user per month, for the segment the plan is sold in: Commercial for most, Education and Government for the A and G plans. Nonprofit prices are on each plan's page. The quote link carries the exact SKU.

A component is in my plan but I cannot find the feature. Why?

A service plan can be present and still need setup, a prerequisite, or a tenant-level switch; a few also depend on the Teams-included or no-Teams variant of the plan. The component glossary says what each one does; our team confirms the entitlement for your exact SKU before you buy.
