Two plans. One straight answer.

For organizations under 300 users, Microsoft 365 Business Premium is usually the better-value choice — it held its price in the 2026 update, it includes the more capable small-business endpoint protection (Defender for Business), and its mailboxes now match E3 at 100 GB. Choose E3 when you need Windows 11 Enterprise, unlimited email archiving, full Data Loss Prevention and Standard eDiscovery, or you're at — or growing past — the 300-seat ceiling that Business plans can't cross.

Microsoft 365 E3 covers the productivity and management core most enterprises need; E5 is an upgrade you buy for a reason, not by default — its value is concentrated in four areas: the full Defender security suite, premium compliance (eDiscovery Premium, Insider Risk, advanced Purview), Entra ID P2 identity protection, and built-in Teams Phone and Power BI Pro. The honest math: if you'd otherwise buy two or more of those as add-ons — or your security team wants Microsoft's full XDR stack — E5 usually pays for itself. If not, E3 plus targeted add-ons for the few people who need them is the better spend.

Business Standard and Business Premium share the same Office apps, email, and collaboration — the entire difference is security and device management. Business Premium adds Entra ID P1 with Conditional Access, Intune device management, and Defender for Business endpoint protection. If company data lives on laptops and phones you don't fully control, or an insurance questionnaire is sitting on your desk, Premium is the version you actually want; if you're a small team on shared low-risk workflows, Standard is fine and meaningfully cheaper.
