GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 Migration — Tenant-to-Tenant Email Cutover
IT Partner’s GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 Tenant-to-Tenant Cutover Email Migration is a professional cutover migration service for organizations moving email from a GoDaddy Microsoft 365 tenant to a Microsoft 365 tenant. The service covers pre-stage migration of historical email data, final cutover of recent email plus calendars, contacts, and rules, domain and MX record changes, verification, and project management.
What this engagement is
This service migrates a GoDaddy Microsoft 365 email environment to a Microsoft 365 tenant using a tenant-to-tenant cutover approach. IT Partner pre-stages older email data first to reduce the final cutover window, then completes the cutover for calendars, contacts, rules, and recent email. The service is intended for companies moving from GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365, organizations undergoing mergers, acquisitions, or rebranding, businesses moving tenants for geographic, compliance, or feature reasons, and teams that need expert assistance with tenant-to-tenant email migration. If your goal is simply to get GoDaddy out of the picture without moving any data, GoDaddy Microsoft 365 Defederation & Tenant Takeover is an easier alternative with some trade-offs — see the pros-and-cons comparison in the FAQ below, and if you can't decide which option fits, book a free 15-minute discovery call.

Frequently asked questions
What is IT Partner’s GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 Tenant-to-Tenant Cutover Email Migration service?
IT Partner’s GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 Tenant-to-Tenant Cutover Email Migration is a professional service for moving email from a GoDaddy Microsoft 365 tenant to a Microsoft 365 tenant. It uses a cutover approach with pre-staging, so older email data is migrated before the final switch to reduce the final cutover window.
Who is this GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 migration service for?
This service is for organizations moving from GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to a Microsoft 365 or Microsoft 365 tenant. It is also suitable for companies involved in mergers, acquisitions, rebranding, geographic moves, compliance-driven tenant changes, feature-driven tenant changes, or teams that want expert help with tenant-to-tenant email migration.
Should we migrate off GoDaddy, or defederate and keep the tenant?
There are two ways out from under GoDaddy. This service — a full tenant-to-tenant migration — moves your email to a brand-new native Microsoft 365 tenant: you get a clean tenant with the technical name and region of your choice and no GoDaddy history, at the cost of a real migration project — per-mailbox data moves, an MX cutover window, and Outlook profiles recreated on workstations. The alternative is our GoDaddy Microsoft 365 Defederation & Tenant Takeover service: we detach your existing tenant from GoDaddy so you keep it under direct Microsoft control — nothing migrates, mailboxes, OneDrive, and Teams stay exactly where they are, and there is no MX downtime, which makes it faster and cheaper. The trade-offs: you keep the tenant exactly as GoDaddy provisioned it, including the permanent .onmicrosoft.com technical tenant name, and any GoDaddy-era configuration stays for you to clean up. As a rule of thumb, defederate if you are happy with the tenant itself and just want GoDaddy out of the picture; migrate if you want a fresh start, a different tenant name or region, or you are consolidating tenants anyway. What is included in the GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 migration?
The service includes pre-stage migration of older emails and folders, final cutover of recent emails, calendars, contacts, and rules, and user, contact, and group migration using AD Connect or CSV. It also includes domain management with DNS and MX record updates, post-migration verification and health checks, project management, a closeout report, and post-migration support.
Does the service migrate calendars, contacts, and mailbox rules?
Yes, the final cutover includes calendars, contacts, rules, and recent emails. Older email and folder data is migrated first during pre-staging, because that approach helps reduce the amount of data that must be moved during the final cutover window.
Does IT Partner migrate users, contacts, and groups from the GoDaddy tenant?
Yes, user, contact, and group migration is included via AD Connect or CSV. IT Partner exports resources from the GoDaddy Microsoft 365 tenant and provisions users in the destination Microsoft 365 tenant as part of the implementation plan.
How long does the GoDaddy Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 cutover migration take?
The stated duration for this service is 7 days. The project uses staged preparation and migration tasks, including kickoff, source tenant health check, resource export, user provisioning, pre-stage migration, domain preparation, final cutover, verification, and project closeout.
What access does IT Partner need to perform the migration?
IT Partner requires Global Admin access to both the GoDaddy Microsoft 365 source tenant and the destination Microsoft 365 tenant. DNS zone access is also required, because the migration includes domain preparation and DNS/MX record changes during cutover.
What are the client’s responsibilities during the migration?
The client is responsible for providing Global Admin access to both tenants and DNS zone access. These are required because IT Partner must export source resources, provision destination users, prepare the domain, switch MX records, and complete verification tasks.
What responsibilities does IT Partner handle during the migration?
IT Partner handles the source tenant health check, resource export, user provisioning, pre-stage email and folder migration, domain preparation, MX record cutover, final recent data sync, calendar/contact/rule migration, verification, EOP setup, and project closeout reporting. IT Partner also provides full project management with kickoff, planning, and closeout.
Will there be email downtime during the migration?
Some email downtime is expected during the domain MX switch, because Microsoft does not allow the same domain to exist in two tenants at the same time. IT Partner reduces the business impact by pre-staging older email data before final cutover, which helps minimize the final cutover window.
How does mail flow change during the final cutover?
During final cutover, IT Partner switches the MX records and completes the recent data sync so mail begins flowing to the destination Microsoft 365 tenant. Some downtime may occur during the domain and MX transition, because the same domain cannot be active in both Microsoft tenants simultaneously.
What is pre-stage migration and why is it used?
Pre-stage migration means older mailbox data, such as historical emails and folders, is migrated before the final cutover. This is used because moving the bulk of the data in advance reduces the amount of recent data that must be synchronized during the final cutover window.
What happens during the implementation process?
The engagement starts with kickoff and planning, including a source tenant health check, then moves through resource export, destination user provisioning, pre-stage migration, domain preparation, final cutover, verification, and closeout. The final stages include MX record switching, recent data sync, post-migration health checks, and a closeout report.
Does the service include DNS and domain changes?
Yes, domain management is included, including DNS record and MX record updates. DNS zone access is a prerequisite because IT Partner must prepare the domain and make the record changes required for final mail flow cutover.
Does the migration include post-migration verification?
Yes, post-migration verification and health checks are included. IT Partner verifies the migration after cutover and provides project documentation and success verification as part of the closeout process.
Is Exchange Online Protection configured after the migration?
No. Exchange Online Protection configuration is not part of the migration scope — the destination tenant keeps its existing protection settings, and moving mailboxes does not change how mail is filtered. If you need EOP reviewed or configured in the destination tenant, that is scoped as separate work.
What post-migration support is included?
Post-migration support should cover migration-related stabilization after cutover. Typical covered items may include mail-flow validation, mailbox access issues, missing-item investigation, calendar/contact/rule validation, and DNS or EOP follow-up. Exact support duration, support hours, escalation process, any SLA coverage, extended hypercare, after-hours support, user training, endpoint repair, and unrelated Microsoft 365 administration should be confirmed or separately scoped.
What is not included in this migration service?
The standard email migration scope does not include migration of OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams content, Teams chats, Planner, Power Platform assets, public folders, third-party archives, or PST ingestion unless separately scoped. It also does not include endpoint reconfiguration, Outlook profile rebuilds, mobile setup, source tenant decommissioning, GoDaddy subscription cancellation, identity redesign, AD Connect remediation, SSO/MFA projects, custom SMTP relay remediation, mail-flow connector redesign, DKIM/DMARC/SPF policy redesign beyond basic DNS cutover, after-hours/weekend cutover, or extended hypercare unless agreed in the statement of work.
