Microsoft 365 Copilot Business Trial, Available Since August 1, 2026: What It Is, Who Qualifies, and How to Use It to Decide

Since August 1, 2026, an organization on a Microsoft 365 Business plan can trial Microsoft 365 Copilot Business before buying seats. If you are unsure whether AI is worth the cost, the trial is a chance to evaluate, in one period, the OpenAI models and the Anthropic models Microsoft offers inside Copilot and Copilot Studio, together with the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams integration, before a seat is on the invoice.

What the Copilot Business trial is

Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is the add-on edition of Microsoft 365 Copilot for organizations on Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard or Premium. Microsoft's FAQ states that it delivers the same capabilities as Microsoft 365 Copilot and is capped at 300 seats per tenant.

The trial is a no-charge period on that add-on, available since August 1, 2026, started from the Marketplace or Billing area of the Microsoft 365 admin center. Microsoft's CSP price list for September 2026 lists it as a one-month, $0 SKU effective August 1, 2026; the seats it includes and what happens at the end are terms Microsoft sets and can change, so check the trial terms in the admin center before you start, and write down the end date on day one.

One admin setting matters before anyone clicks Try: under Copilot, Settings, User access, self-service purchases can be Allow, Allow trials only (users can try but not buy, and the trial does not convert) or Do not allow. Our Microsoft 365 Copilot page carries the Business and standard SKUs at Microsoft's list price with the terms offered through CSP.

Who qualifies, and what has to be in place

Eligibility, from Microsoft's Copilot Business FAQ:

  • 300 or fewer users on Business Basic, Standard or Premium, with or without Teams; above 300 users, Microsoft 365 Copilot applies.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot seats already on an annual commitment cannot be switched to Copilot Business until the term ends, though Copilot Business seats can be added alongside them.

Prerequisites the trial will not fix:

  • Users on the Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel of the Microsoft 365 Apps; the Copilot readiness report in the admin center counts who is eligible.
  • A Microsoft Entra work account per participant, with the apps installed.
  • A SharePoint and OneDrive permission model you would trust under search, because Copilot answers from what the user can already open. Copilot oversharing explains why; the Microsoft 365 Copilot Readiness Assessment tests for it, and Microsoft 365 Business Premium tenants have the Purview and Entra ID P1 controls to fix it.

Two model families, one evaluation window

The owner's question is rarely "does AI work" but "is it worth the money for us", and Microsoft now offers more than one model family inside the same product.

Microsoft 365 Copilot runs on OpenAI models through the Azure OpenAI service, per Microsoft's privacy documentation. Microsoft has since added Anthropic's Claude models as an additional option in Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio. Per Microsoft's documentation, Anthropic has operated as a Microsoft subprocessor since January 7, 2026, under Microsoft's Product Terms and Data Protection Addendum; the models are on by default for most commercial tenants outside the EU, EFTA and the UK; Copilot shows an indicator when a Claude model is in use; users can select Claude in Researcher and Agent Mode in Excel; and in Copilot Studio the maker chooses the model per agent once an admin allows external models.

One trial period therefore lets you put the same work (a quarterly report in Excel, a proposal in Word, a customer thread in Outlook, a meeting recap in Teams) through both model families with the same data, permissions and audit trail, and see which one your people reach for a second time.

The apps integration is the other half: Microsoft's overview lists Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, and the usage report counts activity per app. Model names and versions change, so we do not list them; the Anthropic setting can be scoped to specific users or groups so the comparison stays inside the pilot.

An evaluation plan for the trial period

Treat the trial as a pilot with an end date; the plan below needs one coordinator, not a project team.

Who to include. Fifteen to forty people across at least four roles: sales or customer-facing staff, finance or operations, managers who live in Outlook and Teams, one person from IT, and at least one skeptic. The purchase decision needs the median user, not the enthusiasts.

Week 0: baseline. Each participant writes down three recurring tasks (a weekly report, a customer follow-up, meeting notes) with the time each takes today. Confirm update channels and apps, and scope the Anthropic setting to the pilot group.

The trial weeks: real work only. One prompt-writing session in week one (our Copilot Training and Prompt Workshops exist for this), then the three tasks every week, alternating model families where the app offers a choice, with minutes and a one-line quality note logged per task.

What to measure, weekly.

  • From the Copilot usage report: enabled users, active users, the active-user rate, adoption by app and last activity per user. Two weeks without activity is a finding.
  • From participants: minutes saved per task, and any output that was wrong in a way that mattered.
  • From IT: any answer that surfaced a document the user should not have seen. One such event pauses enablement outside the pilot.

Decision at the end. Sort participants into three buckets: keep a seat (daily use, measurable saving), Copilot Chat only (Copilot Chat is included with the Microsoft 365 subscription at no extra cost), and not now. The first bucket is your purchase quantity. How to run a successful Microsoft 365 Copilot pilot has the longer version.

Reading the meters: what a seat covers and what is billed by use

A Copilot Business seat covers Copilot in the apps, Copilot Chat in work mode and the standard agent interactions a licensed user has inside Microsoft 365. Beyond that, agent usage is metered in Copilot credits and billed to an Azure subscription you own; Microsoft's metered charges are always the customer's.

From Microsoft's documentation:

  • Pay-as-you-go is off by default; turning it on means a billing policy (an Azure subscription plus a set of users) connected to Copilot Chat or SharePoint agents, optionally with a budget and email notifications at percentage milestones.
  • Credits are consumed when users without a Copilot license use agents in Copilot Chat, and by SharePoint agents; Microsoft's example is 12 credits for one complex prompt to a tenant-graph-grounded agent (10 for grounding, 2 for the answer).
  • The Copilot credits report shows credits per user, agent and billing policy over 7 or 30 days, with alerts at 2,000 and 3,000 credits per user in 30 days.
  • Copilot Studio capacity packs prepay 25,000 credits per month; overage falls through to pay-as-you-go so agents keep working.

Leave pay-as-you-go off during a trial unless you are testing agents on purpose. If you are, the Copilot Studio and Agent Capacity Estimator turns agents, sessions and message mix into credits per month and compares packs with the meter, and the Microsoft 365 Copilot Pay-as-You-Go Credits Setup service configures the billing policy and budget.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Copilot Business trial, and how many seats does it include?

They are displayed when you start the trial in the Microsoft 365 admin center and can change; check there rather than relying on an article.

Does the trial convert to a paid subscription automatically?

Read the end-of-trial terms when you start it: Microsoft's general behavior for business trials is to renew to a paid subscription unless recurring billing is turned off, while a self-service trial under Allow trials only does not convert.

Can we compare the OpenAI and Anthropic models during the trial?

Yes, in a commercial tenant (on by default outside the EU, EFTA and the UK, opt-in elsewhere, not available in government clouds), through Researcher, Agent Mode in Excel and Copilot Studio.

Do we need Business Premium for Copilot Business?

No; all three Business plans qualify. Business Premium adds the Entra ID P1 and Purview controls that make oversharing easier to fix before wide enablement.

What happens if we grow past 300 users?

Copilot Business is capped at 300 seats per tenant; above that Microsoft points to Microsoft 365 Copilot, after any existing commitment is fulfilled.

Key takeaways

  • Copilot Business matches Microsoft 365 Copilot's capabilities, attaches to the Business plans and is capped at 300 seats; the trial has been available since August 1, 2026, with its terms read in the admin center.
  • One trial period lets you evaluate the OpenAI and Anthropic models Microsoft offers inside Copilot and Copilot Studio on the same data and permissions, together with the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams integration.
  • Run it as a pilot: median users across four roles, a week-0 baseline, weekly reads of the usage report, and a three-bucket decision.
  • A seat covers Copilot in the apps and Copilot Chat; agent usage beyond that is metered in Copilot credits billed to your Azure subscription, and Microsoft's metered charges are always the customer's.
  • Fix update channels and oversharing before the trial, and size the purchase to the participants who kept a seat.

Before the trial, the Microsoft 365 Copilot Readiness Assessment checks update channels, licensing prerequisites and oversharing before licenses go out. After it, Microsoft 365 Copilot Deployment and Adoption rolls the seats out with champions, prompt libraries and an adoption dashboard, priced per user. If agents are in scope, run the numbers in the Copilot Studio and Agent Capacity Estimator first; seats and packs are CSP subscriptions at Microsoft's list price, and the pay-as-you-go meter is always billed to you.
